Come With Us to Gibraltar – Is This the Destination Wedding Spot You’ve Been Searching For?
Is Gibraltar on your radar for a destination wedding? It might not be the first location that springs to mind but that’s exactly why it’s worth considering. We travelled to Gibraltar in July 2025 to revisit the place where we said our own vows nearly nine years ago, and to see whether it could be the right destination for your wedding and more importantly, the wedding experience your guests will truly enjoy.
A Travel Guide to Gibraltar: A Wedding Destination Worth Discovering
Because destination weddings are more than a ceremony. They’re about the atmosphere, the welcome, the downtime, and those moments in between, sharing meals, taking in the view, and discovering somewhere together. Gibraltar offers all of this and more.
Where is Gibraltar, exactly?
We often get asked this. Geographically, Gibraltar sits at the southern tip of Spain, overlooking the Strait where Europe meets Africa. It’s British territory, yet just a short drive from Spain’s Costa del Sol, so it has its own unique blend of culture and history.
Getting there is simple from the UK: direct flights from several UK airports take under three hours, and Gibraltar’s airport is right in the heart of it all. For couples coming from outside the UK, flying into Malaga (around 1.5–2 hours away by road) is a good option.
Safe, welcoming, and easy to navigate
Gibraltar is small but full of character. It’s easy to get around and feels very safe, with a strong sense of community. Many locals know each other, and there’s a steady flow of workers travelling in daily from Spain, giving the area a friendly, familiar feel. Conversations often start with, “So, where in the UK are you from?”
English is the official language, and the local currency is the British pound—so no exchange rates to worry about.
What to do in Gibraltar?
Because let’s be real, a destination wedding is about so much more than a ceremony. It’s about the atmosphere, the laughter, the downtime between toasts. And in Gibraltar, your guests will be living their best holiday lives.
1. Dolphin Spotting & Ocean Magic
One of the highlights of our trip was a dolphin tour from the harbour. Gibraltar’s waters are home to several species, and the area is protected—so no fishing and a healthy supply of food for them. We were lucky enough to spot baby dolphins swimming alongside their pods. It’s something your guests will remember long after your wedding day.
2. Europa Point & The Lido Life
We visited Europa Point, the southernmost tip of Gibraltar which offers dramatic sea views and a quiet spot for reflection. Right next to it is an outdoor lido, popular with locals and a great place to cool off on a hot day, all under the shadow of the Rock itself.
3. The Rock of Gibraltar
This iconic limestone ridge dominates the landscape and is a must-visit. There are a few ways to get up: the cable car (ideal for the views) or by car with a local guide. We’ve done both, and this time we were glad of the comfort, especially travelling with young children in the July heat.
At the top, you’ll likely be greeted by Gibraltar’s wild monkeys. They are fascinating to watch, but they are wild, so best admired from a distance if not visiting with a professional tour guide. The glass viewing platform is a fantastic spot for photos, and nearby you’ll find the stunning St. Michael’s Cave, complete with a light show and cool air, perfect for a mid-sightseeing breather.
City Style & Culture, with a Hint of Home
Main Street is full of charm, with its colourful shutters, colonial buildings and a mix of British high-street names like M&S and Mango. The squares are lively, the architecture is beautiful, and you’ll always find a café or bar within easy reach.
Ocean Village is where the nightlife picks up. It has a lively marina feel with bars, restaurants and live music. You’ll also find familiar names like Wagamama and Pizza Express for more casual family-favourite meals.
Where We Stayed: A Super Yacht Called The Sunborn
Yes, really. We stayed on the world’s first floating 5-star hotel, and the experience was every bit as incredible as it sounds.
From the moment we stepped aboard and were welcomed with chilled cava (and orange juice for our girls), we were transported. The glass elevator, the subtle sway of the water, the sea bird sounds piped through the corridors—it’s an experience that says: You’ve arrived.
Wedding Spaces You’ll Fall in Love With
Whilst onboard I had the pleasure of meeting with the wonderful Jolanta, an onboard events professional who knows every nook and cranny of the yacht and it’s amazing potential for weddings. She’ll help guide you to the right local planner to bring your dream to life. Let ume tell you what I saw…
The Wheelhouse Terrace
The Wheelhouse Terrace is the true gem of the yacht and a place close to our hearts, it’s where we exchanged our vows almost nine years ago, and it still stands as one of our favourite spots onboard. Set on the top deck, it offers sweeping views across the open sea, the Gibraltar skyline, and the lively harbour below. You can even see into the yacht’s captain’s control room, with the unique airport runway stretching right out into the Mediterranean just beyond.
There’s something so striking about this space, romantic, calm, and completely unique. As the sun begins to set, the whole terrace is bathed in a warm golden glow, adding even more magic to the scene. During the day, it’s a laid-back area with sun loungers and shaded tables, but it’s easy to imagine how beautifully it transforms: rows of chairs, a floral arch, the soft sound of the water, and your guests looking on with joy.
The Sapphire Terrace
And now, let’s talk about the Sapphire Terrace, because this one honestly took me by surprise in the best possible way! A true gem for micro-weddings, this stylish terrace can host up to 30 ish guests and sits on the third floor, offering gorgeous views across Ocean Village. It’s intimate, charming, and perfectly sized for a smaller ceremony without sacrificing any of that super yacht wow-factor.
What really impressed us? The price. At just £500 year-round hire, it’s a standout destination wedding spot that doesn’t come with the usual premium. It’s elegant, exclusive, and totally attainable.
Just steps away is a sleek, modern lounge space with beautiful lighting ideal for guests to mingle before moving into the laid-back Gastro Bar. This is where relaxed luxury really comes into its own. Indoors and out, the bar offers a chic setting with high-set tables, comfy sofas, and leafy statement plants overlooking the marina. Whether you want an exclusive takeover for your reception or a more intimate gathering with partial privacy, it’s all possible here.
And if you’re planning a small wedding breakfast? There’s even a private dining area with a curtain pull-across, cosy, personal, and incredibly well thought-out. With live music and celebrations allowed until midnight, it’s the perfect setup for a laid-back yet unique celebration on the water. I absolutely loved it.
The Aurora Ballroom & Atlas Rooms
If you’re dreaming of a big, bold celebration, the kind that really makes a statement, the Aurora Ballroom is ready and waiting! This vast space sits below deck and brings all the grandeur you’d expect from a super yacht wedding. With its impressive double-height ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the sea, and glimmering chandeliers adding a touch of glamour, it’s a space that can be transformed entirely to suit your style, elegant, modern, dramatic, or anything in between.
And that’s not all. Tucked below deck you’ll also find a variety of indoor ceremony and reception spaces, perfect for when the weather has other plans (which, we’ll say, is rare in Gibraltar!). The Atlas Room is a brilliant option for smaller celebrations or intimate evening events, offering a beautifully styled space with full lighting and a warm, private feel.
It’s this flexibility that makes the yacht so special whether you’re planning a sunset ceremony on deck, a chic micro-wedding on the terrace, or a full-scale ballroom celebration that lasts into the night, there’s a space onboard for pretty much an couple to get excited about.
